Napeocles jucunda
Napeocles jucunda
Also known as the Great Blue (Moonset) Hookwing butterfly, Napeocles jucunda is actually a species of leafwing butterfly found throughout the lowland Amazonian rainforests of Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil; it’s the only species in the genus Napeocles. While the topsides of its wings are a velvety amalgam of black and pale blue, the underside are a variable mottled brown that makes them immediately reminiscent of dead leaves. Adults spend most of their time higher up in the forest canopies, and are not often spotted from the ground- except when basking in the sun with their wings outstretched.
